Darian Thompson will be happy to know that he's going to be officially employed for a little while longer, as the Dallas Cowboys have re-signed the safety.

CBS Sports is reporting that Thompson, who was originally signed off the Cardinals practice squad, was a third-round draft pick of the Giants back in 2016 before he came to Texas last summer. This is seen as a bit of a leap of faith, because he didn't get much time on the field last year. However, in the little bit of time he did get on the field, he more than performed well.

Thompson is expected to be in training and ready to go by the time the season begins, and the Cowboys brass believes that with a little work, he can be an integral part to their defense.

“While the Boise State product didn't see much playing time last year, Archer reports that the Cowboys believe a full year in their offseason program will give the defensive back a chance to contribute on defense.”

Todd Archer of ESPN also reports that Thompson only signed the contract extension for one year, so he has a very limited window in which to “get it together” for the team.

But if anyone can pull it off, it's Thompson, as in the past, he was ranked as the third-best free safety in the draft by DraftScout.com and was ranked the fifth-best defensive back by Sports Illustrated, which is no small feat for any player, let alone a relatively new one.
