Dallas Cowboys defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence enjoyed a breakout 2017 season. As a result, he is looking for a new deal that will make him amongst the highest-paid players at his position. The ongoing discussions between Lawrence and the Cowboys have dominated the headlines ever since the disappointing 2017 campaign came to an end.

According to Tom Pelissero of NFL Media, he could be seeking a contract similar to that of New York Giants defensive end Olivier Vernon, worth around $17 million per year.

It should come as no surprise that his asking price is a bit steep. Lawrence served as one of the few bright spots in an otherwise disastrous year for Dallas and a defense gashed routinely by opposing offenses.

The former 34th overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft enjoyed a break out season in 2017 in which he recorded 14.5 sacks and four forced fumbles. Needless to say, Lawrence is now looking to cash in on his recent efforts this offseason.

However, the Cowboys have made it clear that he will need to put up a larger body of work in order to earn such a lucrative deal. Prior to this season, Lawrence's only other solid season in his four-year career came in 2015 when he registered 55 tackles and 8.0 sacks.

Fortunately, Dallas may have a temporary solution to their current conundrum. They have the option of slapping Lawrence with the franchise tag to further evaluate whether he is worth the money he is seeking. Furthermore, the Pro Bowler will get what he wants in the form of a $17.5 million salary for the 2018 season.
