The Dallas Cowboys have a new defensive coordinator in Mike Nolan, and linebacker Jaylon Smith can't wait to get to work with him.

Smith, who has been a middle linebacker for most of the first three seasons of his NFL career, may be moving to weakside linebacker in 2020, and it seems like he is prepared for his role to change. He discussed this on The ‘Boys and Girls Podcast (via Pro Football Talk):

“Really just some added tools for myself, man … Being able to showcase my versatility, you know being able to run sideline-to-sideline, being able to rush the passer. I’m just looking forward to being able to showcase all of my talents. These guys are putting everyone in the right position, so all I can be is thankful.”

Smith, who played his collegiate football at Notre Dame, was originally selected by the Cowboys in the second round (34th pick overall) of the 2016 NFL Draft.

Due to a knee injury he suffered during his final collegiate season, Smith did not play at all for Dallas in 2016. He made his debut in 2017, playing in every game and registering 81 tackles, a sack and a duo of forced fumbles.

The following year, Smith broke out, appearing in every contest and racking up 121 tackles, four sacks, a pair of forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries and a defensive touchdown.

He then made his first Pro Bowl this past season, once again participating in all 16 games and finishing with 142 stops, 2.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and nine passes defended.

Dallas went 8-8 and missed the playoffs in 2019.
