James Gunn and Peter Safran have been hard at work bringing their vision for the new cinematic DC Universe to life, with Gunn, himself, writing and directing the universe's first theatrical entry, Superman. The DCU is also set to have plenty of series on their way to Max to expand the universe even further, and fans interested to see what the revamped studio's vision for the Green Lanterns will be have been given an exciting update.

Gunn, who is not shy about sharing updates on the state of various DCU projects on social media, revealed that DC Studios has a completed “pilot script and bible” for Lanterns courtesy of writers Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, according to ComicBookMovie. The studio was also in the process of putting together the series' writing team, suggesting Lanterns' development is moving along very well.

“Yes, it’s true. The Lanterns DCU series is putting together a crack team of writers, based on a wonderful pilot script and bible by Chris Mundy, Tom King, and Damon Lindelof,” Gunn said in the Instagram post.

Lanterns was among the first suite of projects Gunn officially announced for the DCU's inaugural slate of film and TV releases, titled Chapter One: Gods and Monsters. Alongside Lanterns, the initial slate of shows includes Creature Commandos, Waller, Paradise Lost, Booster Gold, and season two of Peacemaker.

“No Evil Shall Escape My Sight”

As the title suggests, the series will focus on members of the Green Lantern Corps in a story Gunn teased is inspired by modern detective stories such as HBO's True Detective. Hal Jordan and John Stewart will be the titular Lanterns in the series, and Safran has previously teased the pair will be investigating a mystery linked to the larger story of the DCU.

“We have a few other Lanterns peppered in there but this is really a terrestrial based TV show which is almost like True Detective with a couple of Green Lanterns who are space cops watching over Precinct Earth in it they discover a terrifying mystery that ties into our largest story of the DCU” Gunn said during the 2023 DCU announcement stream.

However, the Green Lantern Corps' presence within the DC Universe will already be established with Guy Gardner set to make an appearance in 2025's Superman. The notoriously hotheaded Lantern will be portrayed by longtime Gunn-collaborator Nathan Fillion, though it is not known how Gardner will fit into Lanterns or the larger universe.

Creature Commandos will reportedly be released later in 2024 to officially kick off the DCU. While it will be an animated series, Gunn has teased the series was cast with the intent of bringing the characters over to live action at some point.

Season two of Peacemaker began filming in April 2024, though no release date has been announced.
