Why The Dodgers Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Dodgers were the team with all of the expectations heading into this season. They have a 44-29 record so far and have been good, but were expected to be even better than they have been. Their offense is a top-three unit, while their pitching is a top-five unit in the MLB. On offense, there are stars with Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, Teoscar Hernandez, Freddie Freeman, Will Smith, and Max Muncy. Their pitching is then led by Tyler Glasnow, Yoshinobu Yamamoto, and Gavin Stone on the mound.

The Dodgers are starting Walker Buehler on the mound where he has a 1-4 record, a 4.64 ERA, and a 1.45 WHIP. Through 33 innings, Buehler has allowed 20 runs on 39 hits with nine walks and 29 strikeouts. The Dodgers are 3-4 in the seven games that he has started in this season. Buehler has struggled when compared to the rest of the starting lineup as a pitcher for the Dodgers. This will be a difficult matchup with how surprisingly well the Rockies have played on offense this season.

The Dodgers have the most talent on offense in the MLB, and they are sitting with a .258 batting average, which is third in the MLB. This is after they finished with a .257 batting average last year before they had a massive offseason by picking up a lot of talent in free agency. Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, and Teoscar Hernandez lead the way in the important batting categories. Ohtani leads in batting average at .309 and in home runs at 19. Betts was injured recently, but still leads in OBP at .405 and in total hits at 86. Finally, Hernandez leads in RBI at 50. Gomber has been inconsistent for the Rockies, so the Dodgers have a favorable matchup with him on the mound.

Why The Rockies Will Cover The Spread/Win

The Rockies are one of the worst teams in the MLB this season. They are 25-46 this season and have lost three out of their last four games. Their bats have been excellent this season, and rank just outside the top 10, but they have the worst pitching staff in the MLB by a wide margin. Brendan Rodgers, Ryan McMahon, Ezequiel Tovar, Brenton Doyle, and Elias Diaz have all been solid for the Rockies behind the plate. Cal Quantrill and Austin Gomber have been okay at best for a unit that has struggled this season. The Rockies' offense has improved, but their pitching has been terrible and is a massive reason why they have struggled so much this year.

The Rockies are starting Austin Gomber on the mound. He has a 1-4 record, a 4.26 ERA, and a 1.32 WHIP. He has allowed 34 runs on 70 hits with 22 walks and 49 strikeouts through 69.2 innings. The Rockies are only 5-8 in the 13 starts this season. Gomber has been a bright spot for the Rockies but has struggled with consistency on the mound. This is a tough matchup for him against the Dodgers because of all their talent behind the plate, despite the Betts injury.

The Rockies' offense has been a bright spot, especially recently. They are 11th in team batting average at .249 after finishing last season with the same average. The offense is led by Ryan McMahon and Ezequiel Tovar. McMahon leads the way in home runs at 12, in RBI at 37, and in OBP at .344. Then, Tovar leads the way in batting average at .290 and total hits at 85. They get a favorable matchup against Walker Buehler, who has been the weak link in a great Dodgers pitching staff, especially with this game at home.

Final Dodgers-Rockies Prediction & Pick

The Rockies have the pitching advantage in this game with Gomber, compared to Buehler for the Dodgers. Los Angeles has the advantage behind the plate, but it's closer than most think. This should be a close game, so expect the Rockies to cover at home, even if the Dodgers eventually win outright.
