The Miami Dolphins have yet to hire a head coach after firing Adam Gase. And it appears that might be because they’re waiting on the New England PatriotsBrian Flores to become available.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, the Dolphins are expected to hire the Patriots’ linebackers coach/de facto defensive coordinator when New England’s postseason run concludes.

Aside from the Dolphins, Flores also interviewed for the Packers and Browns head coaching jobs.

Flores took over as de facto DC after Matt Patricia took the Detriot Lions’ head coaching job last offseason. The 37-year-old has been with the Patriots since 2004 and has been their linebackers coach since 2016.

With Flores in charge of the defense, the Patriots ranked seventh in terms of scoring defense, giving up 20.3 points per game. However, they were 21st in terms of total defense, allowing 359 yards per game.

The Dolphins were a disappointing 27th in scoring defense (27.1 points) and 29th in total defense (391.1 yards) under Gase and DC Matt Burke.

Miami went 23-25 in three seasons under Gase, who stayed in the AFC East to take the New York Jets’ head coaching job. The Dolphins had previously been linked with going after Jim and John Harbaugh this offseason, although those options might be off the table with Flores expected to get the job.

The Dolphins will be taking a significant risk in hiring Flores, who has just one season of experience being a coordinator in any level, and even that was on an unofficial basis. This might be too big of a step for him too soon.

But the Dolphins appear to have confidence in Flores' ability to fill that role for the franchise moving forward.
