The Miami Dolphins ended the Ryan Tannehill era on Friday, trading the quarterback along with a sixth-round draft pick to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for a fourth-round pick and a seventh-rounder.

As a result, Tannehill will cost the Dolphins $18 million in dead money for the 2019 campaign, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

To be fair to Miami, Tannehill would have cost the team $26.111 million next season had it kept him, so by trading him, it is saving some money. However, the route the Dolphins took to get there is certainly interesting.

In order to nab both draft picks they received from the Titans in the deal, the Dolphins paid $5 million of Tannehill's salary when they could have just released him without a post-June 1 designation and ended up paying just $13.423 in dead money next year.

Of course, Miami did receive a couple of picks back in the deal, with the fourth-rounder conveying in 2020, so we probably shouldn't get on the Dolphins' case too much for making this trade.

Regardless, Tannehill will be playing football in a uniform other than that of the Dolphins for the first time in his career next season, as he was originally drafted by Miami back in 2012.

They are coming off of a 2018 campaign in which they won just seven games and missed the playoffs, the latest mediocre season in what has been nearly two decades full of them.

Miami has made the playoffs just twice since 2002 and has not won a playoff game since the 2000-01 campaign.
