The Miami Dolphins hoped they had drafted their quarterback of the future when they selected Ryan Tannehill. But after five seasons (he was injured for the sixth) there is no guarantee that they still see him as their quarterback of the future. How deep could the detachment be?

According to the rumor mill, they may be considering taking a quarterback with their first-round pick (No. 11). Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald thinks the team is committed to Tannehill for next season, but that they may be looking to line up his replacement already.

Why now since Tannehill will only be 30 next season? Because they want to win now and there is not a lot of faith they can do so with Tannehill.

Rumor has it that the team is seriously enamored with Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield. They reportedly came away impressed after Mayfield's interview and plan to spend more time with him at dinner on March 13. But with so many quarterback-needy teams this year, there is no guarantee he’ll still be available at No. 11.

While it is not hard to see why they may select a quarterback in the first round, there are other needs they could fill in the first as well. Kenyan Drake didn’t look bad towards the end of the year. But there is a reason why he was buried on the running back depth chart. Should Jarvis Landry sign elsewhere in free agency, the team will have also have a desperate need at wide receiver to fill.

A quarterback of the future would be a great luxury to have on the roster. But if they are really serious about winning now, they’d use their first round pick on another need.
