Cerrone was born in Denver, Colorado and he was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. He never received treatment for it and he usually got into fights growing up.
He then attended Air Academy High School at El Paso County, Colorado where he started to train for professional bull riding.
At the age of 20, Cerrone began training in kickboxing and Muay Thai before pursuing a career in mixed martial arts. He won multiple titles in his career at kickboxing and he holds a record of 28 wins, 19 by knockout, 1 draw, and no losses.
