World No. 1 golfer Dustin Johnson has tested positive for COVID-19, just one month before the Masters at Augusta National.
The PGA released an official memo noting Johnson withdrew from the CJ Cup at Shadow Creek after testing positive.
Johnson said he hopes to recover quickly, also thanking the PGA Tour's medical staff for their assistance through the process:
“Obviously, I am very disappointed, “Johnson said, via the Tour release. “I was really looking forward to competing this week, but will do everything I can to return as quickly as possible. I have already had a few calls with the Tour's medical team and appreciate all the support and guidance they have given me.”
Depending on the severity of his symptoms, Dustin Johnson will have time to recover and prepare for the Masters, which is scheduled to begin on Nov. 12. He will be hoping to win his first green jacket.
Johnson had a sensational season on Tour. He won three times in 2020 and captured the first FedEx Cup victory of his career after dominating the Tour Championship.
However, Johnson has come up short in the majors.
The 36-year-old took a lead into the final round of the PGA Championship at TPC Harding Park, but a final-round 68 was not enough to hold off Collin Morikawa. Johnson then had a backdoor T6-finish at the U.S. Open at Winged Foot, though he was never truly in contention.
The Masters, originally scheduled for April, is the next major championship on the docket after it was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Dustin Johnson hopes to be able to participate next month as he begins the recovery process.
