Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz says both sides wanted a contract extension done at the soonest possible time.

This was what Wentz told Pro Football Talk's Michael David Smith on June 10.

It was something both sides wanted to get done. I wanted this to be home for a long time. Ever since being drafted it's felt like home.

As soon as we found something that was a win-win, a really fair opportunity, I jumped at it. Because I love this place. I want to be here for a while.

Wentz also didn't focus on a possible collective bargaining agreement. He also didn't look at the possibility of a new deal between the owners and players union which allows bigger contracts for franchise quarterbacks, per Smith.

Wentz told Pro Football Talk:

“I kind of left that to my agents, who do an amazing job.”

Wentz and the Eagles agreed to a four-year extension “worth $128 million, and up to $144 million, with $66 million fully guaranteed at signing and $107.9 million in guarantees,” a league source told NFL.com national insider Ian Rapoport (via NFL.com's Jeremy Bergman) on June 6.

The annual average value (AAV) of Wentz's new contract ($32 million) doesn't surpass that of Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson ($35 million). However, Wentz's new mega-deal tops all NFL players' in terms of total guarantees, per Bergman.

The NFL.com report says Wentz had two years left on his rookie contract before he agreed to an extension with the Eagles. Prior to that, Philly picked up his fifth-year option on April 29.

Now that Wentz has a new deal in place, he can focus on getting back in peak shape in time for the 2019 NFL season.
