Philadelphia Eagles‘ new starting quarterback in Jalen Hurts has been turning heads in practice with his impressive performance under center. As a result, the team's defensive rotation has been getting an earful from defensive Jim Schwartz for their failure to contain the rookie from making plays during practice.

Despite the defense's lapses, Eagles safety Jalen Mills knows in himself that Hurts' performance will only elevate the competition within the squad. He also noted that the 22-year-old has the ability to read in-game situations and know when to utilize his running ability and passing ability in certain scenarios.

“He would make some crazy throws on us, man,” Mills said via NBC Sports. “Some crazy throws. It'd have (Jim) Schwartz cussing us out, guys on the defense mad, pissed off. But that's what you want. You want that competition on the other side of the ball.

“And you see him making those throws, and … you're like, he's a rookie, he can use his legs, he's not a guy who just trying to run because the pocket is collapsing. He was sitting in the pocket and he was making accurate throws on tight coverage, so for sure, I think that's kind of one of the things that sparked my eye that he's comfortable sitting in the pocket.”

The former Oklahoma standout already got his significant taste of NFL competition when he took over the reins from Carson Wentz in their Week 13 tilt against the Green Bay Packers. He came out with 109 passing yards on 5/12 passes completed and a touchdown when he made an appearance in the latter stages of the game.

However, it was already too late for him to flip the script as the Eagles found themselves in a deep hole due to scoreless outings in both the second and third frames of the encounter.

The Packers ultimately managed to hold their ground amid a late rally from the Philly-based squad to snag the 30-16 triumph to improve to a 9-3 record. With a 3-8-1 tally, Jalen Hurts will aim to come out with a better showing as he makes his debut as the team's new starting QB in their Week 14 matchup against the New Orleans Saints.

Eagles fans are hoping that the rookie is indeed as good as advertised with the team looking to close their dismal 2020 campaign on a positive note.
