Jalen Mills will play one more year with the Philadelphia Eagles in the coming 2020 season. However, the Green Goblin will take to the field wearing another number as he will reportedly don Ronald Darby's #21. Changing jersey numbers isn't usually a common occurrence in the NFL, and Mills is more than happy to talk about what made him change his number.

He credited basketball superstars Kobe Bryant and LeBron James for his decision to change his number. Both Kobe and LeBron were famous for changing numbers in the middle of their careers as a form of reinvention. And he's saying that he's going to be a different player on the field once the season restarts.

Per Eagles Wire's Glenn Erby:

“Like LeBron and Kobe did, I’m recreating myself.”

“The number change is just a new beginning,” Mills said Tuesday on a conference call. “One of the guys who always motivated me was a Kobe Bryant or a LeBron James. You see Kobe went from 8 to 24, LeBron went from 6 to 23, and I think it’s just recreating myself, recreating that ‘Green Goblin,’ that monster. It’s a new position, it’s a new field, it’s going to be new energy.”

Mills has been a solid part of the Eagles defense during his four years with the team. Through four years, he's notched 209 tackles, 37 pass deflections, four interceptions, and one pick-6 for 53 yards. His defensive prowess helped the Eagles win a Super Bowl title.

In the coming season, he'll likely be plugged into areas of the Eagles defense that needs more work. If he manages to thrive there, there's no doubt that he'd get a big contract next season.
