Goliath Mitchell scores 21 points and the Edward Waters University Tigers take down the Morehouse College Maroon Tigers 79-78 on Monday night after a nail-biter of a finish to get back on the winning track following a one-game skid.
Kristian Ford had 19 points and 8 rebounds for Edward Waters and Jeremiah Kwarteng added 15 points and 6 boards.
Nate Lacewell scored 17 points for Morehouse, and Cedric Taylor lll has 15 points and 12 rebounds. Demetrius Calip ll finishes with 13 points.
Edward Waters and Morehouse College went head-to-head all night, both vying for better seeding in the upcoming SIAC tournament in March. This thrilling game provided a glimpse into the highly anticipated tournament, featuring 13 lead changes and 10 ties.
The first half featured an intense battle between two tigers at the Adams-Jenkins Community Sport and Music Complex. Morehouse’s Jaden Gray opened the scoring, setting the stage for an impressive offensive showcase from both teams. With neither side relenting, turnovers led to scoring opportunities, and points in the paint proved to be the most effective way to score. Morehouse College shot 44% from the field, while EWU managed 34% in the first half. Morehouse also held a 19-9 advantage in points off the bench, with Demetrius Calip and Nate Lacewell playing crucial roles. As halftime approached, Morehouse held a slim 41-40 lead.
Edward Waters started the second half trailing 41-40. However, they quickly responded with a 5-0 run, thanks to buckets from Jeremiah Kwarteng and Amari Floyd, giving them a 45-41 lead with 19:08 remaining. Both teams exchanged baskets, but then EWU went on a 9-4 run, extending their lead to 60-53 with 11:42 left. This lead held until Morehouse took their first lead of the half, 69-68, with 4:36 remaining. The Morehouse Tigers continued to build on their advantage, leading 78-74 with just 2:23 left on the clock.
At the 1:41 mark, Edward Waters’ Kristian Ford nailed a three-pointer, narrowing the deficit to one, 78-77. As Morehouse failed to close out the game, Demetrius Calip fouled Edward Waters’ freshman forward Amari Floyd with 22 seconds left. Floyd calmly sank both free throws, giving EWU a 79-78 lead.
Morehouse had one last chance, but Jayden Gray’s attempted game-winning 3-pointer fell short, securing the victory for Edward Waters University.
Morehouse College will stay on the road as they play host to Talladega College on January 25 at 8:30 P.M. in the Dr. Billy C Hawkins Student Activity Center.
Edward Waters will host their interstate rivals the Savannah State Tigers on Saturday, January 27 at Adams-Jenkins Complex at 5 P.M.
