It's getting hot up here. An American Airlines passenger is suing the airline over a spilled hot coffee.

The lawsuit states that the flight attendant was negligent by spilling hot coffee on the left arm of George Latorre, TMZ says.

Latorre states his upper left arm received second-degree burns, along with bleeding, blistering, and peeling. He mentions that his tattoo was even damaged.

This happened on his return trip home from Vietnam to NYC. He was on vacation with his son, according to Insider.

Also in the lawsuit is a claim that the passenger's “cosmetic deformity and scarring” might be permanent. Plus, he's still experiencing “extreme pain and suffering, emotional harm, mental anguish and distress,” along with other issues.

David Jaroslawicz, Latorre's lawyer, states that after the spill occurred, Latorre requested a more comfortable seat — even offering to pay for an upgrade. But, they declined to upgrade him, and he remained in economy for the duration of the flight.

Jaroslawicz said his client rushed for medical treatment when the flight landed in New York City. When diagnosed, Latorre was told it was so bad that he needed to seek out a burn specialist surgeon.

The suit states that the airline is “liable to pay full, fair and reasonable damages to plaintiff under the Montreal Convention.”

American Airlines, at this time, does not have any statement on the incident. That said, their protocol for serving hot coffee may soon change after this unfortunate lawsuit.
