Sega and Creative Assembly have just revealed Total War: Warhammer III. It's going to be the largest game Creative Assembly has ever made.

WHAT'S IN TOTAL WAR: WARHAMMER III

Total War: Warhammer III is going to be the finale of the Total War: Warhammer trilogy. Without an exact release date yet, Creative Assembly nonetheless slates the game for a 2021 release.

In terms of scale, game director Ian Roxburgh says about the game:

“In campaign map terms, it's big… roughly twice the size of Warhammer 2's Eye of the Vortex map.”

For those of you who haven't played Total War: Warhammer II, then you're in for a massive surprise. Warhammer II almost doubles the first game's map. Warhammer III triples it.

The size of the map is completely apt for the game's setting. It's going to feature the Realm of Chaos and the Lands of the East. If you're a Warhammer fan, then you'd know what's up. Daemons are coming to Total War for the first time, and it's going to be a hellish game to play.

THE FACTIONS OF HUMANS AND DAEMONS

Previous entries to the series seem so feeble now that we know what's up in Warhammer III. The first two games featured wars in epic scale, between the races of elves, dwarves, and humans. This time, we're talking about more daemons. In fact, daemons comprise a majority of the playable factions available.

Four of the six factions at launch will feature daemons. Khorne, Nurgle, Slaanesh, and Tzeentch are the factions you'll have to pick to play with daemons. Expect these four factions to feature gargantuan beasts and monsters. In terms of playing against them, well, make sure you're prepared to face them on the battlefield. Diplomacy won't be the way to deal with these daemons. The only negotiations they know about involves payments of blood.

The other two factions involve human realms that are unlucky enough to settle near these monstrous beasts. The Cathay is a Chinese culture-inspired faction, while the Kislev (the faction of the Ice Queen seen in the trailer) is a Russian culture-inspired faction. The Cathay faction has yet to make an appearance in tabletop games, so it's going to be a fresh new experience for everyone playing Warhammer III.

MORTAL EMPIRES IN TOTAL WAR: WARHAMMER III

If the campaign map of the base Total War: Warhammer III game isn't big enough for you, then there's good news for you. Mortal Empires first appeared in the second game, which combines the maps of the first two games in one. This feature returns in Total War: Warhammer III, allowing you to play the game on a sprawling map of countless factions and lands that you might never even have the opportunity to visit with your armies.

In its previous iteration, it was hard to play Mortal Empires. It was sluggish, too vast, and it's just too big to play on multiplayer. Finishing one campaign on this map takes ages. Hopefully, when Mortal Engines arrives on Warhammer III, long load times and end turn waiting times won't get in the way of the experience.
