The Atlanta Falcons appear to have their eyes on a certain prospect in the upcoming NFL Draft. According to James Parks of 247 Sports, the Falcons will have a meeting with Mississippi State edge rusher Montez Sweat.
Sweat has been gaining steam heading into the NFL Draft. That should come as no surprise to anyone that saw him play in college.
In 2017, Sweat recorded an absurd 10.5 sacks and 15.5 tackles for loss. He followed that up in 2018 with 12.5 sacks and 14.5 tackles for loss.
Meanwhile, the Atlanta Falcons could use some help in the pass rush. Last season, they ranked tied for 22nd in the NFL with 37 sacks. Takkarist McKinley led the team with seven.
With that in mind, it’s easy to see why Atlanta would go after someone like Montez Sweat. They need a true difference maker in the pass rush game. Without it, their defense is severely crippled.
Sweat has been flying up a lot of draft boards though. This isn’t a case of the Falcons knowing they’ll get him if he impresses them in the interview. There are a number of teams that could definitely use his services.
The meeting will be very beneficial though. If they don’t feel it’s a great fit, the Falcons will know not to worry too much about him. Then if he lands to their pick, they can decide if they want to take him anyways.
However, if Sweat seems like a perfect match for the Falcons, they could decide to move up in the draft. The Falcons currently have the 14th pick in the NFL draft. Due to that, there’s a very good chance Sweat will be gone before they get a chance to draft. If they become that enamored with him though, trading up a few slots could help to guarantee they get their man.
Montez Sweat is on a lot of NFL team’s radars heading into the Draft. The Falcons are a team that make a lot of sense for him, and one that everyone should monitor closely after their meeting.
