Matt Ryan's 14-career with the Atlanta Falcons has come to an end. He was traded to the Indianapolis Colts, who should help him compete for the playoffs again.

Ryan's career in Atlanta was illustrious. He became the very best quarterback, and one of the best overall players, in the franchise's history. The four-time Pro Bowler won an MVP award and an Offensive Rookie of the Year award as he led the most sustained stretch of success in the history of the Falcons. Under Ryan, they made the playoffs six times in 14 seasons. Prior to his arrival, they made the playoffs eight times in 43 seasons, none of which came in consecutive years.

After discussing the trade that sent him out of town Ryan, issued a long, heartfelt statement to the Falcons and the city. He posted his goodbye message on a full page in The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Among several other things, Ryan said that he thought he would retire as a Falcon and that being traded feels bittersweet.

Ryan expressed his gratitude for all the teammates and coaches he spent time with over the years, as well as team owner Arthur Blank. He also discussed what Atlanta meant to his family and how the community showed him overwhelming support from the moment he joined the team. He added that he would be continuing his ATL: Advance The Lives initiative.

Although Ryan was never able to bring a championship to the city, he made his mark as one of the best players the Falcons have ever had. Filling his shoes will be a daunting task.
