It appears that fans will finally be able to play as Ghouls through the Fallout 76 Skyline Valley expansion. This is due to the success of the TV adaptation of the Fallout series. Walton Goggins, the star who played The Ghoul in the Prime Video series, gave developers an idea of what playing as a Ghoul would be like.

However, this isn't the first time Bethesda let fans play as a Ghoul. Back in 2001, Fallout Tactics featured six playable races in the game, including Ghouls. Then in 2004, the PS2 and Xbox game known as Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel allowed players to play as Cain the Ghoul.

When can Fans Play as Ghouls in Fallout 76 Skyline Valley?

According to the launch trailer of Fallout 76 Skyline Valley, players start a new game and play as a Ghoul in early 2025. Assuming Bethesda gives fans access to that option as early as January, they have to wait around seven months.

There's one particular reason we could think of why the developers don't plan to immediately allow players to play as Ghouls. Skyline Valley is set to provide Fallout 76 with its first-ever map expansion. The game has been out since 2018 and everyone has been roaming around Appalachia for half a decade.

Given this factor, it's likely that the developers will focus on maintaining Shenandoah National Park. Bethesda is notorious for launching new content with game-breaking bugs and glitches after all. With Skyline Valley set to launch on June 12, 2024, they're going to need all the time to dedicate to maintenance.

What to expect in Skyline Valley?

Fallout 76 players will take on a plethora of new quests when exploring Skyline Valley. The main storyline focuses on visiting Vault 63 and learning about the mysteries behind it. While the vault is technically active, it's mainly inhabited by a community of Ghouls. Fortunately, players don't have to worry about fighting a horde of Ghouls as all vault dwellers aren't hostile.

In the expansion, players will discover a new type of Ghoul called ‘The Lost'. This variant of the undead creatures is an electrified version of Ghouls. Their electric nature could likely be due to the storm that surrounds Skyline Valley. Players need to be careful when approaching The Lost as they tend to scare away intruders.

However, there is one non-hostile electrified Ghoul, which is Hugo Stolz. Hugo is a friendly The Lost variant with a grumpy attitude. Before the nuclear bombing, Stolz used to represent Vault-Tec Corporation as one of the members of the board. In Skyline Valley, he serves as Vault 63's overseer.

Upon encountering Stolz, players will go through six main story quests. Every decision they make will matter in the expansion as they have the option to either befriend or betray The Lost Ghoul. The choice will remain with the player whether they feel like their values align with Stolz or not.

Aside from a brand new storyline, players should be excited to get a hold of four new weapons. Here's a full list:

  • Shattered Grounds
  • Ticket to Revenge
  • V63 Shock Batton
  • V63 Zweihander

Seeing how expansive Fallout 76 Skyline Valley is, it wouldn't be surprising if the player count suddenly spikes. Especially now that the fan base is aware that they can play as Ghouls in the game soon, it gives everyone more reasons to remain active. Let's just hope Bethesda doesn't mess up badly.
