The Calgary Flames trail the Edmonton Oilers 3-1 in the second round of the 2022 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

As the only two Canadian teams left in the postseason tournament, it truly is the Battle of the North, or more specifically, the Battle of Alberta. And, according to Darryl Sutter, it doesn't seem like victory is in Calgary's reach.

The Flames' head coach discussed the harsh reality of the rivalry. Flames beat reporter Wes Gilbertson tweeted Sutter's disheartening quote ahead of Game 5 Thursday afternoon.

“It’s got nothing to do with effort or anything like that with any of our guys that haven’t been as productive after Game 1 in this series. But you have to give Edmonton credit in that too,” the Flames coach said. “Maybe our guys are doing all that they can. Maybe Edmonton’s just a little bit better right now. That’s kind of been on the sideline. Nobody has talked about that. It’s always been about the negative. What about the good stuff that is going on?”

In other words, Sutter believes that his team is putting in the effort, but they just aren't good enough to win the series. Of course, he's trying to defend his team from the narrative that they aren't working hard enough. Regardless, this has to be tough for the Flames to hear from their head coach. Down 3-1, the Flames will attempt to force Game 6 with a win Thursday night in Calgary.
