League of Legends will be introducing a new progression system called Challenges, which will bring players a plethora of new missions and rewards in Season 12. By completing various tasks, players can rack up achievements and have a consolidated place to showcase their progression through the game. Here's a rundown of how the Challenge system will work.
Instead of having a direct in-game impact, the Challenge system acts as a progress profile for all sorts of achievements and titles in League of Legends. Think of it like leveling up, but having specific tasks to complete instead of earning XP purely through playing the game.
It will also have a tier system, similar to having ranks or mastery levels, but across all elements of the game. In fact, the ranking system for Challenges will also start from Bronze all the way up to Challenger.
Types of Challenges
Article Continues BelowNext season, over 300 Challenges will arrive in game. They belong to six broad categories, focused on different parts or skills essential to being a League of Legends player. Moreover, players can level up or progress through the ranks for each category separately, except for Legacy.
- Imagination: Challenges that focus on unique objectives
- Expertise: Challenges related to mastering a champion or role (e.g., recording a certain amount of S performances on a particular type of champion)
- Teamwork & Strategy: Challenges that focus on working with the team (e.g., potentially, grouping up in teamfights, heals and assist numbers, or taking down objectives together)
- Veterancy: Challenges for veterans of the game who have big lifetime numbers
- Collection: Challenges related to collecting loot like champions, skins, and icons in-game
- Legacy: Challenges that are only available for a limited time (e.g., event-exclusive Challenges)
Completing these Challenges will give players various rewards, such as earning badges with Achievement Points. These can be displayed on the user's profile. Additionally, reaching a specific tier or rank also gives players Titles. The entire concept really emerges as being similar to the current Mastery or Ranked system, since there are specific Titles that can be assigned to your profile, but the developers share that Challenges will be a more all-encompassing experience for League of Legends.
