Riot Games has announced plans to reduce the population of toxic players on their competitive shooter Valorant. The game was met with positive reviews and has continued to grow into one of the world's most-played competitive FPS.
In a statement published by Riot on their website, the studio announced that they'll be updating the Privacy Notice in the game to allow Riot to “record and evaluate voice comms when a report for disruptive behavior is submitted… If a violation is detected, we'll take action and remove the data when it is no longer needed for reviews.”
While the intention is benevolent in nature it brings up the issue of data privacy. Granted, Riot has promised to store data only as needed, in this case when a report is filed, and will immediately be deleted. Riot has also advised players to read the details in-depth so that they could properly understand how the data will be kept safe, what'll happen to it, and how this will impact players.
Riot to update Terms of Service
Of course, Riot will not be able to force this on you. Players should expect to see a new copy of the Terms of Service which should include the said provisions. Players unhappy with the decision, but wish to continue playing the game, will have to agree to these terms.
Valorant will be the only game in Riot's catalog to host this feature. League of Legends, Wild Rift, and Team Fight Tactics all have no plans of implementing the changes in their respective Terms of Service.
