Shin Megami Tensei V is the latest entry in the Shin Megami Tensei series, the main series that the more popular Persona franchise is part of. For those unfamiliar, Shin Megami Tensei is like the less friendly, more serious, and darker older brother of the Persona series. It still retains the core battle gameplay you might have been used to in Persona games by now. With a turn-based RPG battle system where you either fight demons or choose to befriend them.
Shin Megami Tensei games are not connected to each other, and you'll be able to jump right into SMTV without going through the previous entries. The last one to be released before SMT V was SMT IV for the Nintendo 3DS, released way back in 2013. The games' themes and systems may have a lot of similarities, but there is usually no relationship in the story of the games.
Shin Megami Tensei V is set in Tokyo, with two versions of the city: the modern-day Tokyo, as well as an alternative apocalyptic version of Tokyo. The player character will have to achieve godhood to save humanity from the demons.
