Valheim is one of 2021's breakout hits, having sold over a million copies on Steam within just a week. But many players are now experiencing the worst thing that could happen to them in-game. No, it's not that they can't get to Valhalla. It's that their worlds and characters have been vanishing because of an “evil world-destroying bug.” But there's a way to work-around this while the devs are busy trying to fix this early access game.
RAGNAROK MAY COME EARLY IN YOUR VALHEIM WORLD
Valheim players might see the literal ends of their worlds and characters prematurely. While the developers at IronGate Studio have yet to replicate the bug and yet to find a solution, they are definitely aware of the problem. IronGate's very own CEO tweeted as much.
If you are playing Valheim this weekend, please backup your world and characters. The evil world-destroyer bug is still roaming free =( #valheim

While they say they don't know yet how players can trigger this bug, it seems like pressing Alt+F4 instead of properly exiting the game is a suspect.
Its en evil bug, that we have yet to be able to reproduce even once :(. It seems to occur more often if you exit the game by ALT+F4, so try to use menu->exit instead.

The developers are still trying to fix the issue, but in the meantime, all they can do is advise players to backup their files.

If you can't see the Tweet, no problem. Simply go to C:\Users\Username\AppDate\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim and find your World and character files there. Simply save them elsewhere for safekeeping every time you finish playing. This way, if ever a session goes awry, you can overwrite the files in the Valheim folder with your back-up and start over from your latest “checkpoint.”
Of course, players should already expect these kinds of issues when they sign up for an Early Access game. We still do hope that the devs can find a solution to this soon before more people can get affected. Nevertheless, big props to the Valheim devs for responding to this issue immediately. It's good to have a temporary workaround while they look for a permanent solution.
