Ghostrunner, a cyberpunk-themed action platformer, originally came out for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in October last year, and it will finally hit its release date on current-gen consoles next week.

Ghostrunner Release Date (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X | S): September 28, 2021

As is expected, the current-gen version of the game will come with graphical and performance upgrades thanks to the updated hardware, such as post-processing HDR, ray-tracing, 3D audio, and the like. The PlayStation 5 version is also going to make use of the DualSense controller's haptic feedback functions. It will also run in 4K at 120 FPS with “instant loading.”

Additionally, the Ghostrunner PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S versions will also get all modes unlocked, and have an accessibility-focused assist mode. The game's photo mode will also be included with the current-gen release.

The game's official website sets the stage of the game's premise:

“Ghostrunner's original setting blends science-fiction and post-apocalyptic themes. Dharma Tower, humanity's last shelter after a world-ending cataclysm, is torn by violence, poverty, and chaos. Thrown into the middle of the conflict, you must use your unique bond with technology to ascend the superstructure. Discover the story of a world that has already ended and whose inhabitants must fight to survive.”

Currently, Ghostrunner has a score of 81 on Metacritic, based on 64 critic reviews, with IGN giving it an 80, saying:

“With its breakneck pace and skill-heavy gameplay, Ghostrunner is a speedrunner’s dream. But even beyond that demographic, this is a great first person action game that feels punishing but fair. You may die hundreds of times, but instantaneous respawns and generous checkpointing ensure that Ghostrunner’s challenging combat and platforming never become a chore. More than all of that though, Ghostrunner is jam packed with a great variety of enemies, mechanics, and special powers that constantly changed up how I approached its many unique encounters. That meant it always felt fresh, and by the end of its six to eight hour campaign, I was all too eager to jump back in for seconds.”
