Much of the talk heading into the 2018 NFL Draft centered around the New York Giants quarterback situation. There had been a growing notion that the team was confident that Eli Manning still has a couple of productive seasons left him to lead the franchise to success as the starter.

New York made that clear by electing to take former Penn State running back Saquon Barkley with the second overall pick over the group of top projected players at quarterback. However, the front office did decide to take former Richmond quarterback Kyle Lauletta with the 108th overall pick in the fourth round on Saturday.

The selection should immediately put him in play to compete with Davis Webb in training camp for the backup job for the 2018 campaign. Lauletta is an intriguing prospect that has shown to be an accurate passer with solid mechanics that should help him at the next level but possesses limited arm strength that could impact his ability at the next level.

He is coming off a productive 2017 season where he threw for 3,737 yards on 64.9 completion rate along with 28 touchdown passes to 12 interceptions. Lauletta has the potential to latch himself onto the franchise a possible choice down the line to compete for the starting job once the Giants move on from Manning.

In the meantime, it brings another quarterback on board to bring more depth to the position this offseason. It isn't the big splash move that the team could have had in this year's draft, but it's clear that the team is still committed to Manning back their answer at quarterback. He will have a unique offensive talent in the backfield behind him in Barkley that could quickly become a franchise cornerstone that as a huge part in helping lead the team to success in 2018 and well beyond that.
