The New Orleans Saints are trading for a cornerback, but it’s not Patrick Peterson. Instead, the Saints have instead swung a deal for New York Giants corner Eli Apple, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Schefter adds that the Giants will receive a fourth-round pick in 2019 and seventh-rounder in 2020 in exchange for Apple.

Apple was the Giants’ 10th overall pick in the 2016 draft. He started 18 of the 25 games he played in his first two seasons, with one interception and 98 combined tackles. And after a tumultuous sophomore season, Apple bounced back to return as a starter on the Giants defense this season.

Apple now joins a Saints secondary which needs a bit more cornerback depth with Patrick Robinson in IR. He will also be reunited with former Ohio State teammates in reigning Defensive Rookie of the Year Marshon Lattimore and safety Vonn Bell.

The Saints had reportedly been exploring the possibility of trading for the Cardinals’ Patrick Peterson, who wants out of Arizona and apparently has New Orleans as his “ideal trade destination.” But the Cardinals have maintained that they are unwilling to trade their All-Pro corner.

This trade for Apple has likely taken the Saints out of the Peterson sweepstakes. But while Apple is obviously nowhere near Peterson’s caliber as a corner, he should at least be a solid contributor to what is an already stellar Saints defense overall.

As for the Giants, B.W. Webb is likely to step in and take Apple's starting cornerback spot opposite Janoris Jenkins. He started in two of the games Apple has missed this season.
