While the NFL Draft world speculates at which pick the New York Giants will look to draft Eli Manning's successor, general manager Dave Gettleman has other plans for the No. 6 and 17 overall picks.
“I'm just telling you: I'm not going to force a pick,” Gettleman said at his pre-draft news conference Thursday. “You can't draft for need. You'll get screwed every time. You'll make a mistake.”
Quarterback won't be an exception.
In a draft that is top-heavy with blue chip defensive front seven talent, the Giants could likely look there with the sixth pick, despite Manning advancing in age. Players such as Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver or Florida offensive tackle Jawaan Taylor would provide immediate impacts.
Gettleman knows that quarterback is a need though, and will need to be addressed sooner, rather than later. Gettleman called this year's quarterback class a “good” one, but did not hint at which prospects he was referring to.
Oklahoma dual-threat Kyler Murray is expected to be picked at No. 1 overall by the Arizona Cardinals. Ohio State's Dwayne Haskins and Missouri's Drew Lock are penciled in as likely top-10 picks as well. Of course, that doesn't mean that Giants will take either of them.
“The priority is to select the best players,” Gettleman said. “I know that sounds silly. But last year, again, we couldn't pass up on Saquon [Barkley]. He was the best player in the draft. You can't do that.”
The Giants will have other avenues to acquire its future quarterback, such as trading for Arizona's Josh Rosen or drafting Duke's Daniel Jones with the No. 17 pick. But only if the value is there.
