There is still plenty of unknown over just how the San Francisco Giants are planning to approach next month’s MLB trade deadline. At the least, they are reportedly aiming to have Carlos Rodon stay put.
As noted by USA Today Sports’ Bob Nightengale, the Giants will be “keeping” Rodon past the trade deadline.
Rodon opted to leave the Chicago White Sox in favor of a move to the Giants over the free agency period, where he signed off on a two-year, $44 million agreement. He did not end up having a shortage of suitors interested in signing him during the offseason, as he was linked with a return to the White Sox and was also in the rumor mill over a possible move to the New York Yankees.
More so, the New York Post’s Jon Heyman revealed in May that Rodon received a one-year contract offer from the Los Angeles Dodgers during free agency, but the veteran left-handed pitcher elected to instead put pen to paper on the two-year deal that the Giants sent to him.
In the big picture, Rodon will have an opportunity to become a free agent after this season. The second year of his contract deal with the reigning National League West champions will include an opt-out if he manages to record at least 110.0 innings pitched in the 2022 campaign. The two-time All-Star is a mere 10 innings away from reaching this mark, as he has so far logged a 2.70 ERA to go along with 124 strikeouts notched in 100.0 innings pitched.
The Giants currently boast a 45-42 record, and they are a game back of the St. Louis Cardinals for the third wild-card spot in the NL.
