The Kansas City Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens have struck a blockbuster deal with less than a week to go until the 2021 NFL draft.

Kansas City will send its 2021 first-round pick (No. 31) as well as third- and fourth-round picks to Baltimore. The Chiefs will also be trading a 2022 fifth-rounder to the Ravens.

The large draft haul will net the Chiefs star offensive tackle, Orlando Brown, in addition to a 2021 second-round pick and a sixth-round choice in 2022.

How did the two AFC contenders fare in this deal? Let's break it down.

Chiefs land a big fish

Chiefs general manager Brett Veach made out like a bandit in this deal. Let's start with Brown.

The 24-year-old is rapidly emerging as one of the best offensive tackles in football. Brown made the Pro Bowl in 2019 and 2020. What's more, he was a Pro Bowler at both tackle spots, playing right tackle in 2019 and holding down Lamar Jackson's blindside last season.

This is an immense acquisition for the Chiefs after parting ways with longtime left tackle Eric Fisher in the offseason.

Veach understood the need to improve the offensive line and watching the Tampa Bay Buccaneers chase quarterback Patrick Mahomes all over the field in the Super Bowl. He has gone out and added Joe Thuney (free agency) and Orlando Brown in one fell swoop.

The Chiefs suddenly appear to have one of the stronger offensive line units in football. What's more, Veach somehow managed to finesse a second-round pick as part of the deal.

It is worth pointing out Brown is in the final year of his contract. But Veach has found a way to keep his guys, with defensive tackle Chris Jones being the notable example last offseason.

Big, big win for the Chiefs.

Ravens couldn't have done any better?

Eric DeCosta is one of the best general managers in football. But this isn't it.

On the one hand, it was appearing increasingly unlikely the Ravens were going to be able to reach an extension with Brown. OK, fine. But they couldn't have done any better than this?

A number of teams still seemed to need help on the O-line ahead of the draft. Might they have tried to get a better pick, or try to accrue multiple future firsts?

Now, ESPN's Jamison Hensley reported the Ravens are expected to sign Alejandro Villanueva to replace Brown.

Villanueva had a 74.6 overall grade in 2020, per Pro Football Focus. That's a strong replacement, and one might argue DeCosta did well to add another first-round pick with the accompanying Villanueva move in mind.

Still, the Ravens forfeited a second-rounder and just gave one of the best offensive tackles in football to the best team in its conference.

It just feels like DeCosta might have been able to do better with another trade partner.
