The rift between Memphis Grizzlies star center Marc Gasol with former coach David Fizdale was reportedly even more intense than previously thought, as the two had developed not only a poor rapport, but a history of not liking one another at all.

According to Stefan Bondy of The New York Daily News, Fizdale forced his way, morphing the “Grit N' Grind” culture into one of his own, which didn't sit well with many in that locker room.

“He wanted his own locker room,” a Grizzlies source said. “And he basically convinced management to get rid of Zach (Randolph), to get rid of Tony Allen.”

Fizdale's rah-rah didn't stop there, asking each player if they believed they could win a championship, only to be met by a countering Gasol, who claimed the team didn't have the right leader.

“I get it, you want Gregg Popovich, and I want LeBron James,” the coach told his star player, according to a source.

But the real tiff started when Fizdale undermined Gasol's international accomplishments.

“He literally said to Marc Gasol, ‘I know what real championships are, not that fake stuff in Europe,'” a source told Bleacher Report's Ken Berger. “‘That Euro championship stuff doesn’t cut it.'

But the beef became personal, as Fizdale tried to put Gasol down for good, reminding him of his accolades while pointing out the Spaniard's lack thereof.

“He also reminded Gasol that he, Fizdale, won two championships and that Gasol had zero,” wrote Frank Isola of The New York Daily News. “The general feeling among the Grizzlies was that Fizdale’s two championships as an assistant coach in Miami were because of LeBron James.”

If Fizdale is still holding on to this mentality, chances are his stint with the New York Knicks won't last long either, as the team has very little to no playoff experience and the young coach still has hardware to brag about.

Gasol hasn't been known to be the most pleasant of players and his ego also played a part when deciding to confront Fizdale. But as it turns out, this was a partnership that would have never worked in the grand scheme of things.
