The Memphis Grizzlies are declining to make a qualifying offer to guard Tyler Dorsey, making him an unrestricted free agent, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN. The Grizzlies remain open to bringing Dorsey back.
Dorsey, 23, is entering his third season in the league. He was drafted by the Hawks in the 2017 NBA Draft out of Oregon. In his rookie season, Dorsey averaged 7.2 points, 2.3 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game.
In 21 games with the Grizzlies this past season after a midseason trade from Atlanta, Dorsey played 21.8 minutes per game, averaging 9.8 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.9 assists.
Memphis has gone through an overhaul this offseason, trading point guard Mike Conley to the Utah Jazz in exchange for Grayson Allen, Kyle Korver, Jae Crowder and two draft picks.
The Grizzlies drafted Murray State point guard Ja Morant with the No. 2 overall pick and also wound up with Gonzaga forward Brandon Clarke.
With Morant in the fold, Memphis has a terrific young duo featuring the electric point guard and Jaren Jackson Jr. The Jackson-Clarke duo could make for a dominant defensive frontcourt as well.
Dorsey would surely have some interest in being a part of this exciting rebuild, but it looks like he'll have to wait a bit as the Grizzlies decide what they want to do.
