As June approaches, the Charlotte Hornets are still on the search for their next head coach. The team fired head coach James Borrego shortly after their play-in loss to the Atlanta Hawks. Now, according to Bleacher Report, there are two final candidates for the open position.

The news outlet reports that the Hornets are seriously considering both Mike D'Antoni and Kenny Atkinson at this point in the postseason.

D'Antoni has over 30 years of coaching experience, last serving as the Brooklyn Nets' assistant coach. He's been employed as a coach under eight different NBA franchises and was most recently a head coach during his 2016-2020 stint with the Houston Rockets.

Meanwhile, as the Golden State Warriors assistant coach, Atkinson is still busy in the 2022 NBA Playoffs. The Warriors are set to take on the Boston Celtics in the 2022 NBA Finals.

Atkinson began his playing career the same year that D'Antoni began his coaching career. He has spent the majority of his coaching career as an assistant but did spend 2016-2020 as the head coach in Brooklyn.

This update comes shortly after the Los Angeles Lakers agreed to a deal with their new head coach, Darvin Ham. The former Milwaukee Bucks assistant coach was also a top contender for the job in Charlotte. According to Bleacher Report, Ham was scheduled to meet with the Hornets this week, before he finalized a deal in Los Angeles.

For now, neither D'Antoni nor Atkinson have met with Hornets principal governor Michael Jordan. Bleacher Report states that these interviews could begin as early as this week.
