When you ask people about Los Angeles Rams quarterback Jared Goff, the reviews generally come back favorable. No, he's no Tom Brady or Patrick Mahomes, but he is a fine quarterback who just led his team to the Super Bowl.
Right?
Well, throughout this offseason, there have been whispers that the Rams are not entirely committed to Goff as their quarterback moving forward, and ESPN's Dan Graziano even ranked the Rams-Goff pairing 22nd on his quarterback commitment list.
Of course, we have heard nothing from the Rams organization itself that would suggest that Los Angeles does not view Goff as the future, so we should probably just dismiss any other rumors until we see something concrete that indicates that the Rams may not be sold on him.
Let's face it: it's hard to find quarterbacks like Goff.
No, he isn't perfect, but in a league where some teams have been struggling to find a quarterback for over a decade, when you are able to nab a Pro Bowler like Goff, you hold on to him.
At just 24 years old, he is coming off of a 2018 campaign in which he threw for 4,688 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions while completing 64.9 percent of his passes and posting a passer rating of 101.1.
He has a cannon for an arm, he has solid mobility, and he is improving his accuracy. Sure, his reading of defenses can use some work, and his performance in these past playoffs, particularly the Super Bowl, was a bit concerning, but again, he is still very young and does not turn 25 until the middle of October.
I'm sure the Miami Dolphins would gladly take Goff off the Rams' hands, as would a New York Giants team that is trying to find a successor for Eli Manning. I'm also sure the Tennessee Titans would easily swap Marcus Mariota for Goff.
Maybe we are just getting too greedy with questioning Goff's future in LA, because this kid is good.
The problem may be that guys like Brady (and now Mahomes) have set the bar so high for quarterbacks that if a signal-caller doesn't blow you away right off the bat, we think there must be something wrong with him.
But, the fact of the matter is that there aren't many quarterbacks in the league right now who are better than Goff.
I guess one can also make the argument that Goff is merely fitting into Sean McVay's system, as he had a brutal rookie year in 2016 and didn't blossom until McVay took over in 2017, but we can't just discount Goff's physical gifts and talent based on a head coach.
Goff was the No. 1 overall pick for a reason, after all.
Let's also remember that during the first half of the season, there were some who had Goff pegged as an MVP candidate. A shaky second half dropped him out of that discussion, but he was still good enough for a big chunk of the year to actually hear his name mentioned among Mahomes and Drew Brees in terms of MVP talk, so that has to mean something.
I will say that this upcoming season could be a pivotal year for Goff's development, and if he doesn't start getting better at reading defenses, he might have some issues going forward.
But right now? Goff is the Rams' quarterback of the future, and plenty of other clubs in the league would gladly trade quarterbacks with them.
