The New York Islanders look to break their losing streak as they face the Edmonton Oilers. It is time to continue our NHL odds series with an Islanders-Oilers prediction, pick, and how to watch.

The Islanders come into the game sitting at 5-5-3 on the season, which places them seventh in the Metropolitan division this year. They have lost four games in a row though. Last time out they faced the Washington Capitals. It was Alex Ovechkin who opened the scoring on the night, scoring in the first period to take the lead but the Islanders tied it up in the first with an Alexander Romanov goal. In the second period, they would give up two goals, and then Ovi would score again on an empty netter to beat the Islanders 4-1.

Meanwhile, the Oilers have struggled this year. They are sitting at just 3-9-1 on the year, which has led to the Oilers firing their coach already. Last time out, the Oilers broke their four-game losing streak. It was a great first period for Zach Hyman. Hyman scored 9:56 into the first period. Then, he scored on the power play at the 14:09 mark of the first. Then Hyman scored again at the 18:04 mark before Dylan Holloway scored to make it 4-0 in the first. The Oilers would give up a goal in the third period but still win 4-1.

Why The Islanders Will Win

The leading scoring for this islanders team in terms of points comes from the blue line. It is Noah Dobson who leads the team in points this year, sitting with four goals and eight assists on the year, to give him 12 points. He has been solid on the power play this year with five assists as well. The top line for the Islanders provides a lot of the rest of the production. That line is led by Mathew Barzal, Bo Horvat, and Simon Holmstrom.

Horvat is second on the team in points this year sitting with ten. He has four goals and six assists to sit him with ten points. He does have two goals on the power play. Barzal is third on the team in points this year with nine of them. He has two goals and seven assists this year for his nine points, with a goal and three assists o the power play. Houston comes in tied for second on the team in goals, with four of them, but does not have an assist. Meanwhile, it is Brock Nelson who becomes the leader of the team in goals this year. He comes in with six goals this year and two assists for eight points.

The Islanders are to be better on the power play this year. They sit 22nd this year on the power play, with a 15.9 percent conversion percentage. They have struggled when man down as of late. they have allowed power-play goals in three of the last four games, and overall sit 19th in the NHL at a 76.7 percent kill rate.

The Islanders are expected to send Ilya Sorokin to guard the net today. He is 3-2-3 on the year with a 3.24 goals-against average and a .907 save percentage. He has lost each of his last three starts, giving up four goals in each of those games. This year, he has given up four or more goals in five of eight games.

Why The Oilers Will Win

The Oilers, while they are struggling this year, have had some solid production from players. The top line is led by Zach Hyman, Connor McDavid, and Ryan McLeod. Hyman is second on the team in points this year, sitting with 13. He leads the team in goals with seven of them this year, while also having six assists this year. McDavid has not been the scoring threat he normally is so far this year. He has just two goals but does have eight assists on the year. Finally, McLeon has just two assists on the year and has yet to score.

Meanwhile, it is Leon Draisaitl, who comes out with the second unit and leads the team in points. He comes in with five goals and ten assists on the season to give him 15 points on the year. He is joined on the season line with Ryan Nugent-Hopkins who comes into the game with three goals and seven assists this year, giving him ten points. Further, Evan Bouchard has been solid from the blue line. He has three goals and nine assists this year from the blue line, to have him sit third in points this year.

Edmonton has been solid on the power play this year. They sit ninth in the NHL in power play conversions, sitting at a 23.9 percent conversion rate. Still, power-play goals are not translating to wins. This year, they have scored on the power play in eight games. They have gone 2-5-1 in those games this year.

Stuart Skinner is expected to guard the net tonight for the Oilers, he is 2-5-1 on the year with a 3.53 goals-against average and a .861 save percentage. Last time out, he was solid, saving 17 of 18 shots in the game to take the win. Still, he has been below .89- in save percentage in six of his nine appearances this year and has given up four or more goals four times this year.

The Oilers will be playing their first game for a new coach in this one. They have not been great on offense this year though. The Oilers sit 26th in the NHL, scoring just 2.69 goals per game this year. The Islanders are worse, scoring just 2.31 goals per game. Meanwhile, both teams have struggled on defense. The Oilers are 30th in the NHL, giving up 3.93 goals per game, while the Islanders are 14th at 3.08 goals per game. That will be the difference in this game. The Islanders have found ways to win this year when they can keep it close. The Oilers have found ways to lose.
