Jaguars defensive end Dante Fowler will begin training camp on the physically unable to perform list, Mike Kay of First Coast News reports.

Fowler, who was recently suspended for the season-opening game for violating the league’s personal conduct policy, has been dealing with an upper-body injury this offseason which has led to him losing “sizable muscle mass.”

Apart from Fowler, tight end David Grinnage has also been placed on the PUP list, per Kay. Both players can be activated at any time during camp, but they won’t be able to practice with their teammates until they do get the all-clear.

Fowler, the No. 3 overall pick by the Jaguars in the 2015 NFL Draft, had a breakout year in 2017, which is only his second in the league after he lost his rookie year due to a torn ACL. He had eight sacks last year, which was third on the team behind Calais Campbell (14.5) and Yannick Ngaukoue (12.5).

While Fowler's absence does eat away at the Jaguars’ pass rusher depth, the duo of Campbell and Ngaukoue should still be good enough to hold the fort on the edge until Fowler fully recovers.

Fowler is facing a big season after the Jaguars declined his fifth-year option. He’ll be a free agent after the season and will need a big year to land himself an equally big contract. But before doing any of that, he must first recover from his injury, get himself to training camp, and work himself into the best shape possible for the start of the season.
