Javale McGee reportedly not happy with Warriors for slighting him for starting position
The Golden State Warriors have been able to bring back just about every player from last year’s roster except for a couple of key contributors.
One of those free agents is veteran center JaVale McGee, who has yet to sign with a team this offseason. According to Marcus Thompson III of The Mercury News, it may be much harder to bring back McGee given his desire to start next season.
“At this point, the best recourse is bringing back JaVale McGee. But one source said he is not happy with the Warriors for not giving him a shot at the starting slot and giving all of the mid-level to free agent guard Nick Young. McGee believed his play this season earned him more minutes and money, and is looking for that on the market. To be in position to need McGee is a tad precarious. Their other options at third-string center are major question marks.
The Warriors have made a plethora of moves this summer to keep their core group of players, limiting them significantly from adding any other pieces to the puzzle. On top of that, the Warriors have used all of $5.2 million mid-level exception on Nick Young.
This leaves Golden State hoping that McGee would be willing to take another pay cut to remain with the team for another season. However, his desire to play and be a starter over Zaza Pachulia, who had re-signed on a one-year, $3.5 million deal, could ultimately drive him away from returning.
In essence, the ball is in the 29-year-old’s court to make a decision if he values winning over guaranteed playing time.
