Before the resurgence of his career with the Golden State Warriors this season, JaVale McGee spent an unremarkable year last season with the Dallas Mavericks. Only appearing in 34 games, he had limited production, and for the most part made a mark for the wrong reasons outside the court.

News has emerged recently that the 29-year-old Nevada product is being sued by his former landlord in Dallas for violating the pet protocol in his apartment, damaging the property and even paid his rent late, according to Deadspin’s Patrick Redford.

McGee was sued last November by the landlord he rented an apartment from in Dallas for a number of alleged violations.

The lawsuit, which was filed on Nov. 1, 2016, claimed that McGee rented an apartment from Matthew T. Johnson in the Highland Park neighborhood from September 2015 to September 2016. Johnson alleges that McGee caused severe damage to the property that prevented him from renting it out for two months, owed money in late rent fees, failed to pay rent for the last half of the month of September 2016, and kept a cat for 178 days, despite the lease agreement specifically forbidding pets.

The pet in question is McGee’s hairless cat, Raja, who even has its own Instagram account.

It remains unclear why McGee still opted to stay in the apartment that does not allow pets, as he could’ve just rented another place which he can afford, being a professional basketball player. JaVale McGee's legal team has not issued any statement yet, but is expected to make one soon.
