After starring in two Mission: Impossible films, Jeremy Renner left the series. The MCU alum seems open to returning to the Tom Cruise-led series, though.

In an interview with Collider, Renner discussed leaving the franchise. He also revealed that he was originally supposed to appear in more films but had to “be a dad.”

“I had to leave that,” Renner said, continuing, “I was supposed to do more with them. I love those guys.”

He also praised Cruise, saying that he loves him and “we had so much fun.” At the end of the day, Renner's leave came down to the time away from family a film like Mission: Impossible requires.

“It requires a lot of time away. It's all in London. I had to go be a dad. It just wasn't gonna work out then,” he explained.

Will Jeremy Renner return to Mission: Impossible?

While he left in the past, Renner seems open to a return to the series.

“Maybe now that my daughter is older that could happen,” Renner said. “I'd always jump into a Mission: Impossible anytime and back into Brandt. It's great.

That is an optimistic take on the matter. It sure sounds like Renner can't be ruled out for a return to the franchise sometime down the line.

The Mission: Impossible franchise

The Mission: Impossible franchise began in 1996 with the first Tom Cruise-led film. The films are based on Bruce Geller's 1966 TV series of the same name and follow Ethan Hunt (Cruise), an Impossible Missions Force agent, on his various adventures.

Seven films have been released to date, most recently Dead Reckoning in 2023. The films have grossed a cumulative $4.1 billion worldwide at the box office. 2018's Fallout remains the highest-grossing film in the series, making over $780 million during its theatrical run. Each of the last four installments has impressively grossed over $500 million.
