The status of the New York Jets starting secondary remains in flux for their Week 8 game against the New York Giants.

Coach Robert Saleh revealed that cornerbacks Sauce Gardner and D.J. Reed remain in concussion protocol even after the Jets were off last week because of their bye. Reed has missed two games, and Gardner one, because of a concussion.

Saleh said the Jets will know more about each corner’s availability on Wednesday. He had the same timeline for injured offensive tackle Duane Brown and guard Joe Tippmann.

Gardner missed his first game as a pro in Week 6, an upset Jets win against the Philadelphia Eagles. The concussion was a surprise after he practiced earlier in the week and then missed practice the Friday before the Eagles game because of an “illness.” Gardner was ruled out the next day when the concussion was first revealed.

An All-Pro as a rookie last season, Gardner had some struggles in his first five games. He’s dropped a pair of sure interceptions, has a missed tackle rate of 20 percent, and allowed 74 percent of passes thrown his way to be completed.

However, Sauce has allowed only 8.9 yards per reception and one touchdown. After leading the NFL with 20 passes defended as a rookie, he has three this season, including two in a Week 5 win against the Denver Broncos.

Reed, who started all 17 games last season, has also allowed 8.9 yards per catch and has a 77.2 overall grade, per Pro Football Focus. The 26-year-old has not been beaten for a touchdown.

Bryce Hall stepped up in Reed’s absence, starting the previous two games at corner, and made big plays in each. The fourth-year pro scooped up a fumble and returned it 39 yards for a game-sealing TD against the Broncos and followed the next week with an interception against the Eagles.

Practice squad call-ups Craig James and Tae Hayes filled in admirably against Jalen Hurts and the Eagles. James had a pass breakup in the end zone and was handed a 78.9 overall grade, per PFF.
