The Chicago Bulls have had a roller coaster of an offseason thus far. From appearing to be headed for a rebuild, they have managed to get themselves back into the East’s upper echelon, thanks to a couple of big additions.
After being involved in a number of trade rumors, Jimmy Butler has finally solidified his status with the Bulls due to the arrival of Dwyane Wade and Rajon Rondo. Now, the team can shift its gears towards becoming very competitive this season.
Both players, Wade and Rondo, carry with themselves an alpha mentality that could potentially clash with that of Butler’s. But according to K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Tribune, the two-time All Star is looking forward to being criticized by his new teammates.
As good as a Rondo-Wade-Butler trio looks on paper, its weakness is also one of the Bulls’ worst kept secrets. Each player’s willingness to sacrifice touches will be put to a test once they share the floor together, which they will do so for extended minutes, so the need for them to coexist is an urgent necessity.
Dwyane Wade and Rajon Rondo are veterans who have seen the mountaintop. They are aware of the sacrifices needed in order for the team to be successful. Wade was part of a Big Three as a member of the Miami Heat, while Rondo was feeding passes to the Boston Celtics’ version of the Three Musketeers.
For coach Fred Hoiberg, it’s a good problem to have as not every coach has the privilege of having three players of their caliber on his team. And Butler’s initiative to voice out a statement like that bodes well for the team’s chemistry.
