Joel Embiid is undoubtedly a superstar in the NBA, however, it seems that's come with a price. During Friday night's game against the Washington Wizards, the Philadephia 76ers star center landed awkwardly on his left leg. It was a scary moment watching Embiid fall, as his injury history raises concern for himself, the organization, and Sixers fans.
Luckily, the injury isn't as serious as it looked, as Embiid suffered from a deep bone bruise to his left knee, per Shams Charania. The injury jeopardizes the 76ers' potential first-place finish, as he isn't due back until the beginning of April.
Embiid is clearly the best player on the 76ers right now, and he's arguably the best player in the league. Philadelphia is desperate for an NBA title and Embiid gives the team the best chance of winning. However, with his fall on Friday, and his injury history, the championship window could be closing on the Sixers sooner than they'd like.
Joel Embiid's career started rockier than most. He missed the first two seasons in the pros with a foot injury. He finally had his NBA debut in 2016 but was only able to play 31 games, as he was still dealing with injuries. The most games he's been able to play in a single season is 64. The NBA regular season is 82 games long, typically.
So far in Embiid's career, fans have been accustomed to seeing the Cameroonian miss a bunch of games every season. This doesn't bode well for the Sixers' championship hopes, as Embiid missing time prevents Philadelphia from playing to its true potential.
Wear and tear happen to the best athletes in the world. Some of which wind up retiring earlier than expected because of them. At 7-0, 280 pounds, Emiid's body can only handle so much. We've seen prominent athletes cut down through injuries, like Derrick Rose, who won an MVP before suffering multiple knee injuries. He's still a solid player, but it leaves everyone asking, “what if?”
Hopefully, that doesn't happen to Joel Embiid, as he's one of the most exciting players to watch in the NBA. However, if he can't stay healthy, the championship window likely closes before it even opened.
