Gareth Edwards' Jurassic World 4 didn't land Glen Powell, but they have added Rupert Friend in a leading role. He will star opposite his Asteroid City co-star Scarlett Johansson as well as Jonathan Bailey in the film.

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news of Friend's casting. Their report also added that Jurassic World 4 is rounding out its cast ahead of its mid-June production start. The film will begin shooting in London, England.

It will be a quick turnaround, though. Universal currently has the film slated for a July 2, 2025 release date. For a film as reliant on CGI as the Jurassic World series is, it will be interesting to see the results of such a quick production.

Gareth Edwards, fresh off of directing The Creator, will direct the film. He made his directorial debut in 2010 with Monsters before directing Godzilla and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

David Koepp, who wrote the original Jurassic Park film, wrote the script for Jurassic World 4. Plot details are unknown at the moment. Steven Spielberg will executive produce the film alongside Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley.

Who is Rupert Friend?

Rupert Friend first gained notoriety for his performance in The Libertine. He then starred in Pride and Prejudice, Mrs. Palfrey at the Claremont, Outlaw, The Last Legion, and The Boy in the Striped Pajamas.

Recently, Friend has starred in Hitman: Agent 47, The Death of Stalin, At Eternity's Gate, A Simple Favor, and Infinite.

His collaborative relationship with auteur Wes Anderson began in 2021 when he had a small role in The French Dispatch. He subsequently appeared in his next feature film, Asteroid City. Friend then had roles in two of Anderson's Netflix short films, The Swan and The Rat Catcher from his Henry Sugar anthology series.

On the small screen, Friend led the series Homeland. His other TV credits include Strange Angel, Dream Corp, LLC, Anatomy of a Scandal, Obi-Wan Kenobi, and High Desert.

What is Jurassic World 4 about?

As noted above, the plot of Jurassic World 4 is currently unknown. Presumably, Friend and Johansson will encounter their fair share of dinosaurs. It's also unclear how it will continue the ending of Dominion, the latest entry in the franchise.

By the end of Dominion, humans and dinosaurs have learned to co-exist in the world. That is an interesting dynamic that can be further explored in the fourth film.

Either way, Universal is banking on Jurassic World 4 being a huge box office hit. The previous three entries, which were led by Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, all grossed over $1 billion at the box office.

The first Jurassic World film is the highest-grossing entry in the entire Jurassic series. It made over $650 million domestically and $1.6 billion worldwide. Its direct sequels, Fallen Kingdom and Dominion, also made over $1 billion worldwide at the box office.

The Jurassic World series is a continuation of the iconic Jurassic Park films. There were three films released from 1993-2001. Steven Spielberg directed the first two entries before Joe Johnston directed the third film. Colin Trevorrow started and ended the Jurassic World trilogy, with J. A. Bayona directing the middle entry, Fallen Kingdom.
