The New York Knicks have been a picture of ineptitude in the NBA for many years now. The storied organization has not reached the playoffs since 2013, which was also the last time the team managed to put together a winning record. From then on, the Knickerbockers have failed to win more than 37 games in each of the five succeeding seasons.

Based on the current composition of the Knicks, it will take more time for New York to become a title contender. But if the goal is to win somewhere between 35-40 games, Knicks legend Charles Oakley said during an appearance on the BailStreet podcast that it’s a mission that’s virtually in the team’s bag (h/t Ian Begley of ESPN).

Last season, the Knicks finished with a pathetic 29-53 record, though, they could have won more games had unicorn big man Kristaps Porzingis not miss the entire second half due to a season-ending knee injury. Still, the presence alone of Porzingis clearly is not enough for the Knicks to become a team worthy of being labeled as even an Eastern Conference title contender.

The Knicks are now under a new coach in the form of David Fizdale, who is the latest mentor tasked to cure the team’s chronic bouts with mediocrity. The Knicks also have a promising rookie in former Kentucky Wildcats guard Kevin Knox, who heavily impressed in the Summer League.

If anything, the win-total prediction of Charles Oakley for the Knicks is near the estimate of Vegas sportsbooks, which have New York’s line set at 39.5.
