If there’s someone who can relate and talk about Carmelo Anthony’s situation in New York, it’s Stephon Marbury.

Marbury might be a celebrity in Beijing after moving to China to play in the Chinese Basketball Association, but he also once had a career in the NBA and experienced the bright lights of the iconic Madison Square Garden.

The 40-year-old guard admitted that there’s a ton of pressure to perform and win in New York, and he said that this is a never-ending process that Anthony also had to go through.

According to the report by Barbara Barker of Newsday:

“This is New York. This is what happens,” he said. “It’s a cycle. It’s not anything new that’s going on. Somebody has to take the blame. It’s part of being in New York. You gotta come, you gotta ball and you gotta win. If you can’t win, you gotta deal with it. Don’t come to New York if you can’t.”

The Knicks are the NBA’s most valuable franchise at $3.3 billion according to Forbes, so it comes naturally that they — along with their star player — are expected to win.

However, Anthony had an underwhelming stint with the Knicks since joining them in 2011, having failed to lead the team to the playoffs the past four years.

The main problem, of course, is due to the Knicks’ dysfunction, but as Marbury said, someone “has to take the blame.”

Anthony’s future in New York remains in limbo with his possible trade to Houston reportedly stalled due to “fairly dormant” discussions. Though, the signs are there that his time in the Big Apple might be nearing its end.
