As LeBron James celebrates his 36th birthday, San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich sent out a rather passionate praise for the Los Angeles Lakers superstar.
James' born-day provided an opportunity for folks on social media and around the NBA to reflect on the King's sustained greatness and nearly unmatched longevity as an NBA superstar. After all, 18 years into his historical career and LeBron remains at the apex of the sport.
With that said, Popovich was among the many to express his admiration for the Lakers champion.
“It’s a tribute to both his intelligence level and his tenacity, his character and his commitment to excellence,” Gregg Popovich said, via USA Today's Mark Medina. “When you combine those things, you get what we see in LeBron James after all of these years. He looks pretty much like when he first came into the league. He deserves a lot of credit for being the consummate professional, using every technique that he can and being no the cutting edge of things. His mental state along with his physical state really makes him very special, probably more than anybody that has played the game.”
Pop's Spurs (2-1) are facing off against the birthday boy and his 2-2 squad on Wednesday at the AT&T Center.
Two months after leading the Lakers to the franchise's 17th title, James is averaging 22.8 points, 7.5 rebounds and 6.5 assists per game through four games, as he eases his way into the 2020-21 season.
Popovich's praise is certainly a nice present to James, but a finely aged bottle of burgundy from his wine cellar might be more appealing to LeBron–a wine connoisseur himself.
