The entire Staples Center was transported back to the early 2000s on Sunday as Carmelo Anthony lit it up for the Los Angeles Lakers against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Anthony came off the bench and exploded for 28 points in 26 minutes. He shot 10-of-15 from the field, including 6-of-8 from long distance in clearly his best game yet for the Purple & Gold. He also climbed to no. 9 in the career scoring list in NBA history.

After their 121-118 win, Lakers star LeBron James took to Twitter to celebrate his good friend's performance.

LeBron wasn't so bad himself, putting up all-around numbers of 19 points, six rebounds, six assists, two steals, and two blocks, as the Lakers finally notched win no. 1 of the season. But the night indeed belonged to Anthony, who now has 27, 423 points—and The King was all for it (via ESPN).

“He was playing straight up flow and rhythm basketball. To move into ninth all-time on the scoring leaderboard is special. Usually, when some of my friends have these kinds of achievements, I text them or call them or Facetime them and put something on social media. In this case, I got to do it in person because he’s my teammate now. I got to do it in person. That made it special for me.”

Anthony's feel-good game was a much-needed breath of fresh air for the Lakers' recent drama surrounding Anthony Davis and Dwight Howard, plus the fan incident of Rajon Rondo.

The Lakers can gun for a second straight W against the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday.
