LeBron James was widely expected to wear his signature No. 23, this time in purple and gold, after agreeing to a four-year, $154 million deal with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Yet the King wouldn't take that for granted, turning to former Laker great Cedric Ceballos, who once donned the Lakers' No. 23 uniform.

Being the basketball historian that he is, James likely had a quick look as to who wore the Lakers' No. 23 jersey back in the day, as players like Jim Barnes, Lou Hudson, Reggie Jordan, Mitch Richmond, and Ceballos have donned the now-staple number.

Ceballos, drafted by the Phoenix Suns in 1990 with the 48th pick, played for 11 seasons in the NBA, only two and some change with the Lakers, before being traded back to the Suns in 1996, where he would spend another season-and-a-half.

Ceballos' jersey isn't hanging from the rafters by any means, but he did provide some memories after putting up two 21-plus-point seasons in the purple and gold — a trend James will look to exceed as the new franchise star of this new-look roster.
