The Los Angeles Lakers have gone through some drastic changes over the last few years from the retirement of superstar Kobe Bryant to an overhaul of the front office with Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka now sitting under owner Jeanie Buss.

The storied franchise is determined to get back on top in the NBA with two dedicated leaders in the front office doing everything within their power to right the ship after the longest playoff drought in the team’s history. This summer, more than any in recent memory, will be crucial to the Lakers achieving their goal with Pelinka shedding some light on what the front office is going through as NBA free agency draws near.

“You don’t get to see the sun,” Pelinka said after the NBA Draft on Thursday night. “It seems like it’s just a constant grind. As you guys know, Magic is all about excellence here, and we want to outwork everybody. So it feels like the last several weeks have just been constant planning sessions, moving the chessboard around with all the different options. We won’t rest until we get it right. I think that’s just how Magic and I are built, and the rest of our staff. Just work until we get it done. I think there’s an incredible excitement to get to July 1 and see what the options are. We do feel like the road is a flexible road for us. If July 1 happens with one or two superstar players, great. If it doesn’t, we love this young core that we’re developing, and we know 2019 could present some amazing opportunities as well. So really, any road we go down we’re really confident in.”

The Lakers brass knows there’s an opportunity to be a contender immediately with the potential moves they can make this summer. LeBron James, Paul George, DeMarcus Cousins, and potentially Kawhi Leonard are up for grabs with the team having the cap space and trade assets to make some substantial moves.

The goal right now is landing two superstars one way or another with George and James more than likely being the top-two targets in free agency. Although nothing is for sure at this point, Pelinka and Johnson are focused on the task at hand with the support of Buss along the way.

“I’ll personally feel a sense of urgency until we get a championship,” Pelinka said. “I won’t rest until then. It’s just the way I’m built. I know Magic is the same way and Jeanie. We don’t compete to play games. We compete to win championships. There will be a sense of urgency until that happens.”

After drafting shooters Mo Wagner and Sviatoslav Mykhailiuk in the draft, the team can now put all their focus into free agency which gets underway on July 1. The Lakers appear to have the best chance of landing LeBron with every other move being secondary and that’s about as good as it gets for any team trying to put themselves in the title contender conversation in the NBA.
