The Los Angeles Lakers were reportedly ready to move toward hiring Monty Williams as their new head coach, so they were surprised he signed with the Phoenix Suns, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN.

Williams signed a five-year deal with the Suns. The Lakers are now expected to hire former Cleveland Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue.

“While LeBron, I do know he would prefer him (Lue) as head coach, I know this: He didn’t tell the Lakers, ‘You have to do it.’ Because they were ready to move toward Monty Williams and I think the Lakers never really took seriously the possibility he was going to take that Suns job, and he did, and I know it surprised them.”

Of course LeBron James would prefer Lue to coach the Lakers. James and Lue won a championship with the Cavs in 2016 and have a very close relationship.

Williams choosing the Suns over the Lakers is pretty shocking. The Lakers were a mess in 2018-19, but the Suns have been a walking disaster for years. Los Angeles still has LeBron and will try to sign a star free agent this summer. The only thing going in Phoenix, meanwhile, is Devin Booker.

The Purple and Gold will probably make the Lue hiring official within the next couple of days.
